How do I prepare for my initial phone screen?

Frequently, especially for large companies, initial phone screenings are done by a recruiter. These recruiters are either from the Human Resources department and increasingly an external contractor calling on behalf of the hiring company. Often times, the goal(s) of these screenings are one or many of the following:

  • Determine if you are still interested / available
  • Determine your salary expectations
  • Confirm key technical skills
  • Clarify details / type of expertise from resume
  • Level of communication skills (and/or other soft skills)

In order to prepare for the initial phone screen, study your resume. Be sure you have a copy in front of you during the call so are able to identify what position and/or experience the interviewer is referencing quickly. Also, be sure you are prepared to elaborate on why you worked on projects listed on your resume and how you accomplished what you have listed (e.g., strong risk mitigation strategies employed throughout the project).

Spend some time thinking about your salary expectations and doing a little research. Things to keep in mind: cost of living adjustment, real estate prices, opportunity for advancement (e.g., will you be making the same of close to your starting salary for several years), and relocation costs.

Just prior to the call, be sure you are in a positive, upbeat mood. Your mood will come across in the call. Your enthusiasm and positive attitude have the greatest potential to leave a lasting positive impression.
